Aran Naturally Dyed Yarn

Aran Weight Naturally Dyed Yarns
Substantial, warm, and satisfying — Aran weight creates the sweaters, cowls, and afghans you’ll reach for on the coldest days. Every skein naturally dyed with botanical color in our West Virginia dye works.
Superwash Merino Aran offers 100% certified mulesing-free merino from Peru with machine-washable convenience. At 219 yards per 100 grams, this 4-ply construction creates fabric with excellent drape and warmth. The superwash treatment makes this practical for items that need regular washing — children’s sweaters, blankets, gifts for non-knitters who might not know hand-washing protocols. The pure merino content allows botanical dyes to saturate deeply, creating rich colors that hold true through countless washes.
Non-Superwash Merino Aran brings traditional wool character: 21.5 micron merino in 4-ply construction without chemical processing. At 219 yards per 100 grams, this creates fabric that blooms beautifully when blocked and develops a soft halo with wear. Non-superwash treatment allows natural dyes to penetrate more deeply, creating richer, more nuanced colors than superwash can achieve. The fibers want to felt slightly when blocked — that’s their strength, creating unified fabric that grows softer and more cohesive over time. This is wool for knitters who love traditional fiber behavior and hand-washing rituals.
Both versions offer the same generous gauge and satisfying knit, but different care requirements and slightly different hand. Superwash stays smooth and defined; non-superwash develops subtle texture and bloom. Choose based on your project’s needs and your relationship with hand-washing.
Great for: Chunky sweaters, thick cowls, warm afghans, traditional Aran patterns with cables and texture, quick-knit cardigans, winter accessories that need serious warmth. Aran weight typically works at 16-18 stitches per 4 inches on US 8-10 needles.
Natural dye performance: Aran weight showcases botanical dyes with dramatic depth and complexity. The substantial gauge creates fabric where you can see tonal variation develop across inches rather than centimeters — variegated colorways create bold striping, tonal colors show subtle shifts. Madder produces everything from soft peachy-pink to deep wine. Indigo builds from periwinkle to midnight navy through multiple dip cycles. Plant tannins with iron modifiers create earth tones with serious presence — charcoal grey, bark brown, ochre gold. The non-superwash version shows slightly richer, more saturated colors due to deeper dye penetration.
Care: Superwash Aran can be machine washed on gentle cycle, though hand washing extends life. Non-superwash Aran requires hand washing in cool water with wool-safe detergent — squeeze gently, never agitate, to prevent felting. Both versions should be laid flat to dry away from direct heat. Aran weight can take a long time to dry due to density — roll in towels to remove excess water, then lay flat with good air circulation. Block aggressively for traditional Aran patterns to showcase cable definition; block gently for stockinette to maintain drape.
