Lace Naturally Dyed Yarn

Lace Weight Naturally Dyed Yarns
Ethereal and transformative — lace weight creates shawls that float, sweaters that drape like fabric, and held-double projects with sophisticated texture. Every skein naturally dyed with botanical color in our West Virginia dye works.
Mohair/Silk “Gossamer” blends 70% super kid mohair with 30% mulberry silk from Peru in single-ply construction. At 437 yards per 50 grams, this creates the signature mohair halo with silk providing just enough structure to keep it manageable. The high mohair content creates warmth without weight and blooms dramatically after blocking. Perfect for shawls that seem to glow, held double with fingering weight for dimensional colorwork, or on its own for ethereal wraps. Natural dyes create luminous colors — the mohair halo catches light differently than the silk core, adding depth to every shade.
Mohair/Silk “Heirloom” increases the ratio to 72% kid mohair and 28% silk for maximum mohair character. At 450 yards per 50 grams, this offers slightly more yardage and more dramatic halo than Gossamer. The higher mohair content creates deeper texture in lace patterns and blooms more aggressively when blocked. Choose this when you want mohair to be the star — the silk just whispers structure while mohair shouts warmth and halo.
Alpaca/Silk “Shimmer” pairs 75% baby Suri alpaca with 25% mulberry silk from Peru. At 459 yards per 50 grams, this creates drape that rivals silk at a fraction of the cost. Suri alpaca has longer, straighter fibers than huacaya alpaca, resulting in lustrous yarn with silky hand and minimal halo. The silk adds sheen and structure while alpaca provides legendary warmth and softness. This blend takes botanical dyes with remarkable depth — indigos appear almost black-blue, madder creates sophisticated dusty rose rather than bright pink, earth tones glow with subtle richness. Perfect for shawls with serious drape, lightweight cardigans, and luxury cowls.
Cashmere/Silk combines 50% cashmere with 50% tussah silk from Italy in 2-ply construction. At 431 yards per 50 grams, this offers ultimate luxury — cashmere’s cloud-soft warmth meets silk’s structure and sheen. The tussah silk adds subtle texture and nubs that create visual interest, while cashmere provides warmth without weight. This blend takes natural dyes beautifully, with colors appearing rich and saturated. The 2-ply construction provides more structure than single-ply lace weights, making it excellent for lace patterns that need definition or held-double projects where stitch clarity matters.
Great for: Shawls, wraps, lightweight scarves, held double with fingering/sock weight for sweaters and accessories, luxury cowls, and any project where drape and halo matter. Lace weight typically works at 32+ stitches per 4 inches on US 0-3 needles when knit alone, or can be held double at fingering/sport gauge.
Why lace weight? These luxury fibers shine at lace gauge where their special properties — halo, drape, sheen — become the focus. A 50-gram skein creates a substantial shawl. Held double, they add dimension and warmth to simpler base yarns without overwhelming the project. Block lace weight aggressively and watch it transform.
Natural dye performance: Lace weight luxury fibers showcase botanical dyes with nuance and sophistication. Mohair’s halo creates an optical effect where color seems to glow from within. Alpaca’s smoothness shows color saturation clearly and deeply. Cashmere develops warm, rich tones. All four blends benefit from the silk content, which adds subtle sheen that catches light and adds dimension. Madder creates everything from pale coral to deep burgundy. Indigo builds complex blue-greys. Plant tannins produce sophisticated neutrals that work as beautifully in lace as jewel tones.
Care: Hand wash cool water with wool-safe or pH-neutral detergent. Squeeze gently — never agitate or wring. Roll in towel to remove excess water. Block lace projects aggressively on blocking wires or pins — this is where magic happens. The fibers open dramatically, revealing lace patterns fully. Mohair blooms into its full halo. Alpaca and cashmere relax into ethereal drape. Silk adds structure so projects hold their blocked shape. Air dry completely before unpinning — lace weight can take 24-48 hours to fully dry.

All of our colorways are tonal – with shifts in color from light to dark as part of the natural dyeing process. Colors and tones may vary from the images online. Pre-wash in cold water – by hand – before use, as natural dyes may release excess color during the first several washes. Lay flat to dry out of direct sunlight.
