Sock Naturally Dyed Yarn

Sock Weight Naturally Dyed Yarns
Built for the long haul — sock weight combines softness with serious durability for everyday socks, hard-working accessories, and lightweight sweaters. Every skein naturally dyed with botanical color in our West Virginia dye works.
Merino/Recycled Nylon Sock delivers the classic sock blend: 75% superwash merino for softness and 25% recycled nylon for strength. At 437 yards per 100 grams, this 4-ply construction creates fabric that stands up to daily wear, machine washing, and years in your favorite boots. The higher nylon content (compared to fingering weight) adds resilience exactly where socks need it — heels, toes, and high-friction areas. Natural dyes saturate beautifully on this blend, with madder creating vibrant reds and pinks, indigo building deep blues, and plant tannins producing earth tones that hide dirt gracefully.
Merino/Tencel Sock brings sustainable softness: 50/50 merino and Tencel (wood pulp cellulose) creates an eco-sock with silk-like drape and natural moisture-wicking properties. At 383 yards per 100 grams, this blend offers exceptional comfort for warm-weather socks, baby items, and anyone with sensitive skin. Tencel is naturally antimicrobial and breathable — your socks stay fresher longer. The cellulose content takes botanical dyes with remarkable clarity, creating jewel tones and saturated colors. Note that this blend has less elasticity than high-nylon content yarns, so it works best for looser-fitting socks or garments where drape matters more than bounce-back.
EcoWash Merino/Nylon Sock features 80% EcoWash merino from New Zealand and 20% Global Recycling Standard certified nylon from Canada. At 370 yards per 100 grams, this environmentally conscious blend delivers performance without compromise. EcoWash processing uses less water and energy than traditional superwash treatments while maintaining machine-washability. The higher merino content creates exceptionally soft fabric, while the GRS-certified nylon adds structure from post-consumer recycled materials. Perfect for knitters who want durability with documented environmental standards.
Merino/Yak/Silk Sock elevates everyday socks into luxury: 70% superwash merino (17 micron), 20% natural yak, and 10% silk combine in a 3-ply construction. At 420 yards per 115 grams, this exceptional blend offers warmth without bulk (yak), durability that resists pilling (all three fibers), and subtle sheen (silk). The yak fiber adds legendary warmth and resilience — this blend ranks among our most durable for hard-wearing projects. Natural dyes develop sophisticated complexity on yak blends, with earth tones showing particular depth and richness. Perfect for socks that deserve heirloom status, lightweight sweaters with drape, and accessories that balance luxury with longevity.
Great for: Everyday socks, baby items, hard-working mittens and hats, lightweight sweaters, shawls with substance, and any project that needs to survive real life. Sock weight typically works at 28-32 stitches per 4 inches on US 1-3 needles — same as fingering weight, but with sturdier construction.
Why sock weight vs. fingering weight? Sock weight uses 4-ply construction (most of ours) rather than 2-ply, creating fabric with better stitch definition, less splitting while knitting, and more durability. The plies twist together to resist abrasion — crucial for socks, baby clothes, and anything that faces heavy use. Fingering weight offers more drape; sock weight offers more structure.
Natural dye performance: The protein-rich blends (merino/nylon, merino/yak/silk) take botanical dyes deeply and hold color through countless washings. Madder creates everything from soft coral to deep burgundy. Indigo builds through multiple dips from sky blue to midnight navy. Plant tannins with iron modifiers produce sophisticated earth tones — sage, ochre, charcoal, bark brown. The Tencel blend shows clearer, brighter colors due to cellulose fiber. All colorways benefit from sock weight’s sturdy construction, which shows tonal variation while maintaining structural integrity.
Care: Machine wash gentle cycle for superwash blends, though hand washing extends the life of any handknit sock. Use wool-safe detergent or pH-neutral soap. Lay flat or hang to dry — never use the dryer, which can felt even superwash wool and shorten elastic life. The merino/yak/silk blend benefits from less frequent washing due to yak’s natural antimicrobial properties. All sock yarns improve with gentle blocking, which evens out stitches and showcases pattern work.
