Yak & Silk Naturally Dyed Yarns
Yak & Silk Naturally Dyed Yarns
Mongolian yak down meets New Zealand merino and Italian silk for exceptional warmth, durability, and subtle sheen. Naturally dyed in small batches at our West Virginia dye works.
Merino/Yak/Silk Sock Weight combines 70% superwash merino (17 micron) with 20% natural yak and 10% silk in a sturdy 3-ply construction. The yak fiber adds warmth-without-bulk and remarkable durability — this blend ranks high for hard-wearing projects. At 420 yards per 115 grams, it works beautifully for socks that last, lightweight sweaters with drape, and shawls with substance. The silk adds just enough sheen to catch light without competing with the matte elegance of yak.
Yak fiber comes from the soft undercoat of Mongolian yaks, combed during spring molt. It’s naturally warmer than merino, softer than cashmere, and exceptionally resilient. The hollow fiber structure provides insulation without weight, making this blend perfect for three-season wear.
Natural dyes develop complex character on yak blends. Indigo creates deep navy with subtle grey undertones. Madder produces sophisticated dusty rose rather than bright pink. Plant tannins yield rich earth tones — the yak fiber seems to hold brown and grey botanicals with particular depth.
Perfect for: Everyday socks that need to last, lightweight sweaters for cool weather, shawls with structure, accessories that balance warmth and drape. The 3-ply construction wears beautifully and resists pilling.
Care: Hand wash cool water with wool-safe or pH-neutral detergent. The yak fiber is naturally antimicrobial and requires less frequent washing than pure wool. Lay flat to dry away from heat. Yak fiber relaxes beautifully with gentle blocking and maintains its shape through years of wear.
